It is the day to remember the Ten Maidens. Ten maidens, wedding guests, were to greet the bridegroom on his arrival. Five of them took no spare oil for their lamps. But the other five took flasks of extra oil with them.
The groom was delayed. Those without extra oil had to go into the city to buy more oil. But the other five were able to use their spare oil, and only they were ready to greet the groom on his arrival. The first five missed the opportunity. The message of this parable is – “Always be ready!” “Watch therefore, for you know neither the day nor the hour.” (Matt 25: 13).
