Feast Of The
ASSUMPTION OF THE HOLY-MOTHER-OF-GOD
Because of her purity and extreme holiness, St. Mary was preserved from corruption after her death and was raised and taken into Heaven. St. Mary was taken up by the power of God, and by the ministry of angels.
Blessing Of The Grapes
Why does the Armenian Church bless grapes on the Feast of the Assumption of St. Mary you may ask? Why not another fruit? The answer is as follows. Since the grape is considered the queen of the fruits, and its juice is the symbol of the blood of Christ and Holy Communion, the Church celebrates and gives thanks to God for the blessing He bestows on mankind. Each year the faithful should begin eating grapes only after the “Blessing of the Grapes” during the Feast of the Assumption (Asdvadzadzeen) until the end of the year. Traditionally, the faithful refrain from eating grapes until the grapes are blessed each year.
