CHRIS BOHJALIAN AT ST. THOMAS
By Maral Kalishian
On Friday, November 6, 2015, the St. Thomas Armenian Church Cultural Committee and Hamazkayin Armenian Educational and Cultural Society of NJ hosted a discussion with NY Times bestselling author, Chris Bohjalian. The event, held at St. Thomas Armenian Church in Tenafly, NJ attracted many of Bohjalian’s fans and scholars alike. Talar Sesetyan Sarafian of St. Thomas Cultural Committee began the presentation by introducing Ani Tchaghlasian, President of Hamazkayin NJ Chapter. Tchaghlasian praised Bohjalian’s most recent published book, “The Sandcastle Girls”, as both a romantic novel and one that introduced the truths of the Armenian Genocide to millions of “odar” readers who had never heard of it before. This, she mentioned, “strengthens the cause of the Armenian diaspora today”. She also thanked him for his efforts in the Vermont State Senate to get the Armenian Genocide Recognition passed.
Bohjalian spoke proudly about his Armenian family’s background, showing photographs of his great-grandfather, grandfather and parents in a side show. His focus then turned to recent trips he and his family took in Western Armenia and Turkey. He told eloquent stories of his encounters there, pairing each story with photographs of the images he saw and the people he met.
Bohjalian showed images of The Sandcastle Girls book covers from around the world, which reinforces his position as a current, popular author. He humbly stated that his world-wide acclaim coming from publishing 18 books, allows him the audience of millions of readers, whom he provides positive insight to about Armenians. The audience was lucky enough to get a sneak peek into Bohjalian’s most recent book, “The Guest Room, due to release to the public in January 5, 2016. It is centered around a young, strong, Armenian woman who is the victim of human trafficking. A heavy subject matter, but one who deserves our attention. The Guest Room promises to become another NY Times Best Seller for Chris Bohjalian.
“The Guest Room” can be preordered on www.chrisbohjalian.com. Bohjalian answered insightful questions from the audience and stayed during the wine and cheese reception to sign special book inserts for anyone who pre-ordered “The Guest Room”.
